NEXT MEETING
Tuesday 10th January 2012

We welcome everyone who is interested in Central Park!

Note from the Secretary of Friends of Central Park:
I think most will agree with me that we began 2011 with considerable uncertainty and doubt over our efforts to ward off various property speculators out to poach parts of Central Park much less than building any positive plans for improving the park. However, at the end of the year, we had come full circle. The property developers eventually evaporated (along with £17 million of Argyle Football Club’s money) by August. Moreover, having spent considerable energies ‘defending the park’ over the past years, we, at last, were able to move on to more positive endeavours in the second half of 2011. For example, for the park, we ended the year having achieved the notable milestones of: gaining the agreement from the Council for CP to be nominated for Queen Elizabeth II status, began planning a Jubilee Walk, and, importantly, succeeded in negotiating with the Planning Dept resulting in the Council publishing a works schedule that will remove the industrial waste spoil on the neglected Zoo field which will enable the planting of a Community Orchard of heritage fruit trees. This is easy to write down but, in reality, none of this could have been achieved without the considerable efforts of a number of people in the FOCP – so thanks to them.

The Central Park Area Action Plan (CPAAP), was approved in September 2008 by the Government's Planning Inspector after a consultation process. It set the planning framework for the next 15 years. It allows for a sports centre, expansion of Home Park, and building development at Pennycomequick and Peverell/Outland Road corner - losing parts of the park included allotments tended for years. Friends of Central Park say yes to swimming pool and leisure facilities within the footprint of the current buildings and car parking. But no to expanding the area run by Argyle, or any hotels, conference centres, or offices that mean building on the park's greenspace with traffic and parking problems increased.

Friends of Central Park, Plymouth, support plans which maximise opportunities for all communities and ages to use the open space freely, to increase biodiversity and link in with other health, environmental and community initiatives in Plymouth. The group is investigating support for legislation to protect urban green space.

Friends of Central Park submitted their comments on the plan (pdf) in February, and a Supplementary statement (pdf) in April followed by supporting evidence (htm index). For the comments to be valid they had to be based on the '' Tests of Soundness".

The Friends of Central Park (FCP) association was set up by and for people who want to protect the precious green lung in the heart of Plymouth. Friends of Central Park aim to

  • Protect the Park against any loss of open space
  • Increase use of the Park by all ages and communities in Plymouth
