POUNDS HOUSE: the current lease ends this year and we have a new rumour - that 'something nice is being planned for it'.

SELLING OFF THE FAMILY SILVER - Western Morning News - Neil Young - 9 Febrary 2008
Poor Plymouth - The family silver is being sold off, piece by piece. It's a calamity that is taking place nationwide, except that here it is pronounced. Plymouth looks and feels like a city in the throes of a political experiment. And the beneficiaries will be? Not the many, but a select few. Most of all they will be the developers who are somersaulting each other for a share of the loot.

The Central Park Area Action Plan (CPAAP), was approved in September 2008 by the Government's Planning Inspector after a consultation process. It sets the planning framework for the next 15 years. It allows for a sports centre, expansion of Home Park, and building development at Pennycomequick and Peverell/Outland Road corner - losing parts of the park included allotments tended for years. Friends of Central Park say yes to swimming pool and leisure facilities within the footprint of the current buildings and car parking. But no to expanding the area run by Argyle, or any hotels, conference centres, or offices that mean building on the park's greenspace with traffic and parking problems increased.

Friends of Central Park, Plymouth, support plans which maximise opportunities for all communities and ages to use the open space freely, to increase biodiversity and link in with other health, environmental and community initiatives in Plymouth. The group is investigating support for legislation to protect urban green space.

Friends of Central Park submitted their comments on the plan (pdf) in February, and a Supplementary statement (pdf) in April followed by supporting evidence (htm index). For the comments to be valid they had to be based on the '' Tests of Soundness".

The Friends of Central Park (FCP) association was set up by and for people who want to protect the precious green lung in the heart of Plymouth. Friends of Central Park aim to

  • Protect the Park against any loss of open space
  • Increase use of the Park by all ages and communities in Plymouth
